A malignant (invasive, infiltrating) tumor of the colon of epithelial origin. Approximately 90% of colon cancers are adenocarcinomas. Most colon cancers are sporadic. Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) occurs in individuals with constitutional mutations in DNA repair genes.
