Maxillofacial Surgery and Introduction to Dentistry- schedule -winter semester 2026/2027
Maxillofacial Surgery and Introduction to Dentistry classes are carried out in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Clinical University Hospital in Olsztyn by:
dentist Joanna Krysztopik.
CLASSES 1.
Introduction to dentistry and patient examination
• An introduction to the organisation of the ward, outpatient clinic and operating theatre; health and safety regulations, aseptic techniques, medical confidentiality and patient interaction.
• Participation in ward rounds; presentation of patients and discussion of indications for hospitalisation.
• Taking a medical history and examining the craniocervical region, neck, oral cavity and stomatognathic system; describing the local condition.
• Tooth numbering; basic diseases of the teeth, periapical tissues, periodontium and oral mucosa.
• Fundamentals of dental diagnostic imaging and analysis of the imaging studies available for the patients in question.
• Participation in seeing patients at the outpatient clinic; establishing a differential diagnosis and determining further management.
• Assisting with dressing changes and other relevant procedures; observing or assisting during procedures in the operating theatre.
CLASSES 2.
Dental infections, cysts and tumours of the maxillofacial region
• Participation in ward rounds and assessment of the course of treatment for patients with head and neck infections.
• Dental foci of infection and their general medical significance; indications for the removal of the focus.
• Abscesses, cellulitis and infections of anatomical spaces; diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and conditions threatening airway patency.
• Odontogenic diseases of the maxillary sinuses and the oro-sinus connection.
• Cysts of the maxillofacial region, odontogenic tumours and tumour-like lesions – fundamentals of clinical, imaging and histopathological diagnosis.
• Early symptoms of oral and maxillofacial cancers and principles for referring patients for rapid diagnosis.
• Participation in seeing patients at the outpatient clinic, assisting with dressing changes, and observing or assisting during available procedures and operations.
CLASSES 3.
Traumatology and perioperative care
• Participation in ward rounds; assessment of patients following injuries and procedures involving the craniofacial region.
• Injuries to the teeth, craniofacial bones and soft tissues; patient examination and interpretation of basic imaging studies.
• First aid: securing the airway, controlling bleeding, dressings and basic immobilisation.
• Basics of wound management, surgical suturing and Z, Y and W plasty – demonstration and discussion of indications.
• Assessment for surgical treatment, patient preparation, perioperative care and the most common complications.
• Participation in outpatient clinic work, assisting with dressing changes and observing or assisting in the operating theatre; case summaries and assessment.
