Regulations of the subject Oncology for the medical sciences Students in the Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Varmia and Masuria in Olsztyn

I. General Information
1. Classes are held at the Clinic of of Radiotherapy, Clinic of Oncology and Immunooncology at the SP ZOZ MSWiA z WMCO in Olsztyn.

II. Classes- lectures, seminars and exercises

1. Before the start of clinical classes, the student is obliged to read these terms and conditions. Classes include lectures, seminars and exercises, which are held according to the framework and a detailed program and schedule which are available at the office and at the website of Oncology Department.


1.1. Attendance at all classes, including lectures and seminars is mandatory. Lectures and seminars are held as regular classes at time specified in the schedule. Knowledge from lectures, seminars and exercises will be included into exam.

Before each seminar and selected exercises, there will be a short test

1.2 Exercises are based on the knowledge contained in the recommended textbooks, lectures and seminars and indicated by the lecturer (to be prepared for the next day). The exercise block will be assessed (graded) on the basis of active participation in classes, discussion of a scientific article and knowledge of the main oncological units discussed at the seminars (oral answer at the last class).

1.3 Recommended textbooks:

The American Cancer Society Oncology in Practice: Clinical Management (chapters: 1,4,6,7,9,12,14, 16-21, 25-26, 28,34)

The American Cancer Society's Principles of Oncology: Prevention to Survivorship (section 3, section 4: chapters- 16-21, section 6: chapter 30)

1.4. Clinical exercises at the bedside require appropriate clothing and equipment. The student needs to change shoes, have an ID, medical white coat and stethoscope. The student is also required to comply with the Rules BHP of the Hospital, in which the course is held, in particular - to the principles of sanitary and epidemiological safety.

1.5 In order to enter the wards, exercise rooms, and meeting patients, a student must have a Student ID with photo, and changed footwear. The student enters the ward only with an assistant, to which he was assigned on a given day, must also apply and respect the schedule of the classes. A study of patients is carried out at the place designated by the assistant. It is forbidden to make own decisions regarding patient’s diagnostics or treatment. 

1.6 The student is required to be prepared for each class, from the material scheduled for the given class and from the material discussed previously. The teachers will evaluate student’s activities and achievements. The teacher has the right to check the preparation of the student for the class. The test can be oral or written. If the student is considered not prepared, the teacher may not allow him/her to participate in the class, indicating the form of retaking it.

1.7. Any absence from lectures, seminars and exercises must be justified in writing and then worked off and accomplished according to the rules by the person conducting the classes. Written justification must be submitted to the Secretariat of the Oncology Department. Allowance to work off the classes is given by the Head of the Department. Additionally repeating the classes requires a written confirmation by an assistant or assistant lecturer.

1.8. In the case of not having worked the missed classes out, a student is not allowed to take the final exam, which means that the student receives insufficient note. Unexcused absence from the lab or seminar makes it impossible to obtain credit for the course; therefore Student is not allowed to pass the final exam.

1.9 In case negative notes Student should improve them to be allowed to take the final exam.

2.0  It is not allowed to record, copy the classes or materials that are presented in any form without the prior consent of the teacher. Failure to comply with this prohibition will automatically cause a negative assessment of the subject and it will be referred to the competent authorities of the university.

2.1 The student is obliged to respect the principles of safety and the safety of patients in accordance with the recommendations of the teacher, as well as strict compliance with the rules of medical confidentiality.

2.2  During clinical exercises it is strictly prohibited to use mobile phones and all kind of electronic devices equipped with camera or microphones without the prior consent of the teacher.

III. Exam

2. The course will be accomplished based on the final exam but only after completing all the exercises and seminars before: Examination in oral or written form (60 questions single choice), 60 minutes. Student should correctly answer min 42 questions (70%) to pass the exam. The limit of 70% may be changed by +/- 5% upon decision of the Head of Oncology Department. Results of the exam will be given after 5 days.

2.1. For the first term examination (oral or written form) shall be admitted only the students who:
2.1.1. were present at all the exercises or had any absence excused,
2.1.2. received positive notes from all seminars and exercises in a given cycle.
2.2. The second term examination (oral or written form) shall be admitted students who:
2.2.1. received a failing grade for the first time,
2.2.2. were not be present to the first term,
2.3. For the third term examination (oral form) shall be admitted the students who:
2.3.1. received a failing grade in the second period of examinations

2.4. During all the examinations it is strictly prohibited to use any aids, communication tools and all kinds of electronic devices equipped with a camera or microphone, etc. Violation of this prohibition will automatically result in failing grade and will be referred to the matter to the Disciplinary Committee of the University. It is prohibited to bring phones and smartwatches into the examination room.

IV. Others

1.  Students with individual organization studies are required to contact the Head of the Department in order to determinate the way of execution of the subject.
2. After completing the course the student will be asked to take part in a short survey with an aim to assess the quality of teaching.

3. Any matters not covered in the rules above are of responsibility of the Head of the Department.
4. In matters related to the course one should contact the office of the Department of Oncology (telephone 89 539 83 10 from 9:00 to 14:30).
5. Regulations shall come into force upon signature by the Head of the Department.
