On November 30, 2007, the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery was established at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn by ordinance of the UWM Rector based on Resolution of the Senate UWM No. 242 of 30/11/2007. The head of the Department was Mr. Prof. dr hab. n. med. Wojciech Maksymowicz.

On May 26, 2017, the Senate of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn issued opinion on Resolution No. 160 regarding the creation of Collegium Medicum as an organizational unit of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

Pursuant to Resolution No. 156 of the UWM Senate, two Faculties were established: Medical and Health Sciences. The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery was assigned to the Medical Faculty of the Medical College of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

According to the Ordinance No. 16/2018 of the Rector of the University of Warmia and Mazury of 12 March 2018, at the request of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Chair of Neurology is created.

Ordinance No. 19/2018 of the Rector of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn of March 12, 2018, at the request of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, changes the name of the Department of Neurology of Neurosurgery to the Department of Neurosurgery.

The structure of the Department of Neurosurgery includes:

• Clinic of Neurosurgery

• Clinical Department of General and Neurological Rehabilitation

• Department of Innovative Neurosurgery and Neurophysiology

• Clinical Department of Treatment of Coma in Adults "Alarm Clock for Adults"

• Stem Cell Research Laboratory

The Electromyography and Electroencephalography Laboratory are also active in the Department of Neurosurgery.

In November 2012, the Electromyography studio received a new Nicolet EDX device from CareFusion, which allows the extension of the scope of research to include somatosensory evoked potentials and visual evoked potentials.

We also have one of the most modern 3T magnetic resonance imaging devices in Europe, allowing imaging of very small changes throughout the entire central nervous system and a standard computed tomography apparatus.

The employees of the Department conduct didactic classes with students of the Faculty of Medicine at the Collegium Medicum UWM as well as with students of the Faculty of Health Sciences in the fields of Nursing, Emergency Medical Services and other fields of study as part of general university lectures.
