I. REGULATIONS OF THE COURSE
- The elective course “Interdisciplinary Endocrinology – Practical Course with Elements of Thyroid Ultrasonography” is an elective subject offered to students of the fifth year of the Medical Degree Programme.
- The elective course is practical in nature and comprises clinical classes, seminars, and practical sessions in thyroid ultrasonography.
- The detailed scope of topics and learning outcomes are specified in the course syllabus, available in the USOS system. The proposed elective course complements and extends the content included in the compulsory Internal Medicine curriculum, providing students with an opportunity to further develop their knowledge in the fields of endocrinology and diabetology. The course is complementary to the regular teaching programme and enables students to broaden their knowledge by exploring additional practical aspects of the topics discussed.
- The classes are conducted at the Medical Simulation Centre of the University Clinical Hospital, Aleja Warszawska 30, 10-082 Olsztyn.
- Due to the practical nature of the elective course and the necessity of ensuring that students have the opportunity to actively participate in practical training involving the use of an ultrasound machine, practical sessions in thyroid ultrasonography shall be conducted in small groups consisting of no more than six students.
- Where the number of students enrolled exceeds the optimal group size, the elective course may be conducted in two rounds, subject to the organisational capacity of the relevant academic unit.
II. ORGANISATION OF THE CLASSES
- The elective course comprises a total of 20 teaching hours.
- The elective course includes:
-seminars covering selected topics in endocrinology, diabetology, and obesitology;
- classes based on the analysis of clinical cases including interpretation of laboratory and imaging results;
- practical classess covering the fundamentals of thyroid ultrasonography. - The practical ultrasound sessions are conducted under the direct supervision of an academic teacher.
- The organisation of the classes is intended to provide students with the opportunity to actively participate in the analysis of clinical cases and to acquire basic practical skills related to thyroid ultrasonography.
III. ATTENDANCE
- Attendance at the elective courseof the student’s choice is mandatory.
- Any absence must be reported to the coordinator of the elective course.
- In the event of an excused absence, the manner in which the missed class is to be made up shall be determined individually in consultation with the coordinator of the elective course, taking into account the organisational possibilities.
- An unexcused absence may result in failure to obtain credit for the elective course.
IV. COMPLETION OF THE ELECTIVE COURSE
- The requirements for obtaining credit for the elective course are:
-participation in the classes;
-active participation in the analysis of clinical cases;
-obtaining a positive result in the practical assessment. - The practical assessment shall include, in particular, an evaluation of the student’s basic skills related to performing a thyroid ultrasound examination under the supervision of an academic teacher.
- The detailed assessment criteria are based on the learning outcomes specified in the course syllabus.
V. RULES CONCERNING CLASSES INVOLVING PATIENTS
- Where classes are conducted with the participation of patients, the student shall be required to comply with the principles concerning respect for the dignity, privacy, and autonomy of the patient, as well as to maintain the confidentiality of information obtained during the classes.
- Any ultrasound examination performed by a student shall be conducted exclusively for educational purposes and under the supervision of an academic teacher.
VII. FINAL PROVISIONS
- In matters not regulated by these Regulations, the applicable regulations of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, as well as the provisions set forth in the course syllabus, shall apply.
- These Regulations shall remain in force for the 2026/2027 academic year.
- Any organisational changes concerning the implementation of the elective course shall require prior consultation and agreement with the course coordinators.
