Professor Reda Žemaitienė agreed to lead the lecture on the invitation of Professor Andrzej Grzybowski.

 

Lecture is organized as a part of the project "University of Great Opportunities - a program for improvment of teaching quality managemnt and teaching quality" POWR.03.05.00-00-Z201/18 Module 1. Implementation of international lecturers into the open lecturs given at the School of Medicine.

Prof. Reda Žemaitienė has been the head and professor of the Department of Eye Diseases of the University of Health Sciences in Kaunas, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences since 2017. She is the head of the Corneal Diseases and Uveitis Section at the Ophthalmology Clinic, an ophthalmologist who performs complex eye operations for children and adults. The Eye Disease Clinic is the only one in Lithuania that performs intraocular operations in children. It is the largest diagnostic and treatment facility for eye diseases in Lithuania. The clinic is the most important training base for ophthalmologists and resident doctors in Lithuania. The Clinic's research interests include searching for immunogenetic and metabolic markers in patients with macular degeneration and rapidly progressing diabetic retinopathy; phenotypic expressions in optic neuritis and their relationship to molecular markers; relationships between visual functions and immunogenetic markers and morphological changes in pituitary adenoma; the association of pseudo-exfoliating syndrome with ischemic heart disease and oxidative stress; searching for new clinical symptoms and immunogenetic markers of corneal diseases, evaluation of the effectiveness of new cataract surgery methods, searching for connections between glaucoma and other neurodegenerative diseases, and new innovative non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

Prof. Reda Žemaitienė deals with cataract surgery, glaucoma, corneal transplantation, corneal diseases and uveitis. By educating residents, she introduced clinical simulation techniques to the clinic, which was the first to use virtual reality methodology to train ophthalmologists. She is a member of the Lithuanian Glaucoma Society, a member of the European Society of Corneal Diseases Specialists and the vice president of the Lithuanian Society of Ophthalmologists. She is the Lithuanian representative for ophthalmology in the European Council of Ophthalmologists, the representative of the Hospital of the University of Health Sciences of Lithuania in the Network of Reference Centers for Rare Eye Diseases (ERN-EYE). Together with other researchers, she prepared and published educational and popular scientific publications as well as publications in scientific journals, mainly on the surgical treatment of cataracts, such as "Infectious eye diseases", "Development of artificial intraocular lenses", "Acute disorders of the optic nerve and retinal circulation system", " The use of laser technology in the diagnosis of eye diseases ”. The professor is a member of the Honorary Gallery of Progimnazjum im. Antanas Vienuolis in Anykščiai.
