Squamous cell carcinoma is the neoplastic growth of squamous epithelium covering the esophagus. It occurs most often in the upper and middle portions of the esophagus. Known risk factors are tobacco smoking, alcohol abuse, diet, especially some hot liquids, Plummer-Vinson syndrome, achalasia, diverticula.
